The Story Begins

Discovery, Stabilization & Bringing Home Hillsborough’s Painted Theatre Curtains

Grand Drape curtain on stage in GoshenEveryone had been looking forward to this day for some time. Weary from work and in the mood for a fine entertainment, the townspeople had gathered to share in one another’s fine company and good fortune.

The lights were turned low, the music began, and suddenly two colorful tableaux—in the form of painted theatre curtains—recreated the Hillsborough of the 1930s before their eyes.

Just as in days gone by, the downtown area is once again bustling with visitors and citizens pleased to enjoy all that Hillsborough has to offer: unique stores, fine eateries, family-owned service businesses, and the past preserved and housed in the new Hillsborough Heritage Museum.

Enjoy this visit to our shared past, and learn about the historical and cultural significance of these painted theatre curtains, as well as the story of their serendipitous trip from here to Goshen and back.

Our Mission is to preserve and house the history of Hillsborough through the restoration of an historically significant building, so that today’s generation and future generations have a place to experience the past.
